NEW EUROPEAN PATENT SPECIFICATION (After opposition procedure)
”THE TREATMENT OF RESPIRATORY DISEASES”
Document Type and Number: European Patent EP1267866 B2
Publication Date: 07/20/2016
Assignee: Sosei R&D Ltd. (London Bioscience Innovation Centre 2 Royal College Street, London NW1 0NH, GB)

Summary of the Invention:
According to a first aspect of the present invention, a dry powder inhaler comprising a controlled release medicament suitable for inhalation,
for the treatment of a disease of the airways, wherein the medicament is a dry powder comprising glycopyrrolate in the form of microparticles that have a diameter of from 0.1 µm to 10 µm and the powder also comprises large carrier particles,
and wherein the inhaler is capable of dispensing a unit dose of the powder comprising less than 5 mg glycopyrrolate,
wherein the glycopyrrolate is formulated with a hydrophobic matrix material to form the microparticles,
and wherein the medicament permits the glycopyrrolate to exert its pharmacological effect over a period of greater than 12 hours.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided the use of glycopyrrolate for the manufacture of a medicament as defined in the first aspect of the invention,
for the treatment of a disease of the airways by dispensing a unit dose of the medicament less than 5 mg glycopyrrolate from a dry powder inhaler.
By use of the invention, glycopyrrolate is able to exert its therapeutic effect over a prolonged period, and a patient will benefit from relief of symptoms for a longer period than with conventional antimuscarinic treatments.
Furthermore, the patient may only require a once-a-day treatment regimen, and as this will usually avoid missed treatments, better compliance is expected.
In addition, providing the agent in a controlled release formulation ensures that a lower initial peak of activity is achieved, which may result in reduced side-effects associated with anticholinergic activity, for example dry mouth.
