Cremers教授自身も以前に研究者としてMicrosoftやSiemens等へ所属していた時期もあり、このワークショップに招聘された背景を想像すると大変興味深い。
ま、ここまでは単に憶測の域を出ないものの、少なくともSLAM関連の研究を恐らくしてきたであろうMicrosoftやAppleですら(これまでは、kudanの技術なんてGAFAMなら一瞬で超えられると、散々批判されてきましたが)、やはりvisual SLAMの弱点である照度や天候等への脆弱性を課題として認識していた事が改めて明白となった訳であり、こういったワークショップでSLAM Challengeのような企画を呼びかけたこと自体が、artisenseがこれまで取り組んできた4Season論文やLM-Reloc論文等に代表されるvisual SLAMの弱点克服方への需要の高さの証左と思われ、益々kudanがこの度決したvinsに対する再評価の正当性を裏付ける根拠になるのではと考えます。

こういうワークショップのような我々が知らない場所で提携や共同研究が決まっていくのでしょうか。商業的にはライバルでも学術的には、SLAMcoreのAndrew Davison教授とCremers教授は実は仲が良さそう。それにしても豪華な顔ぶれ。
