Dimon then commented on credit markets, saying, "Investment-grade credit spread will be dead wrong too," adding, "It's just a matter of time." His comments about the credit markets followed a Bloomberg interview last week in which he warned that higher interest rates and possibly stagflation could spark problems in the commercial real estate sector, leveraged firms, and private credit. "If you have higher rates and — God forbid — stagflation, you will see stress in real estate and leveraged companies, and private credit," Dimon said last Thursday. Dimon confirmed again, "We're not going to buy back stock now." He noted buybacks will come into play when the stock goes back down.

From March 2020 until August 2021, $2.1 trillion in excess savings were built up after $4 trillion of stimulus. Since then, US households have depleted these savings at a pace of ~$70 billion per month down to a -$72 billion in March 2024. At the same time, US credit card debt has risen by $330 billion to a record $1.1 trillion. Recent stats about credit card debt: 61% of Americans aged 18-64 paid for their groceries with a credit card in 2023. 19% of adults in the US used savings not intended for routine living expenses and 3.5% exploited the Buy Now, Pay Later option. 20% of adults who used credit cards did not pay the full balance but met the required payment. However, 25% of those with very low food security did not even pay the minimum required payment on their credit cards.
