Various conflicting clues for the investors.
On the one hand, you have Japanese domestic institutions increasing their ownership 2016-2017, on the other hand, you have lackluster stock performance. It's not an easy call. Maybe there is no consensus even among the various institutional investors as to how to value this stock.
Another solid state battery stock, FDK, has PE=200.
Should this stock be regarded like a biotechnology stock (based on addressable market, technology platform, chance of success)? -

Murata's battery strategy (CEO, 10/3 news): solid state battery to initially target wearables (2019~) due to high safety requirements; still trying to increase energy density; design differs from Toyota's. Not rushing to start auto batteries production until market direction becomes more clear. Seems logical.
Strategy and status are somewhat similar to Hitz. -

Hi, you seems to be very knowledgeable. Do you have a strong background in chemistry? I should be asking you for advice instead. I like 4092 after looking at the material on its home page. Is it too late to buy 4092?
It seems (though I need more information to confirm whether this is true) that Hitachi Zosen may have some proprietary technology in the formation of the layers. I looked at one Toyota patent and they seem to imply that pressing is not the most desirable technique; someone mentioned that Hitachi Zosen has some other way of molding. So putting these two pieces of information together, I guess Hitachi Zosen may have some unique know-how. Looking at the new patents just published by Hitachi Zosen may shed some light on this issue. Hopefully there is English version for me.
I think it's safe to assume that solid state battery technology is the logical next step as the technology is mature. Does 4092's energy dot improve energy density? -

Let me try to answer your question in a broader sense.
Dyson, Toyota both favor solid state battery for its safety and capacity. Toshiba comes up with fast-charging battery which is also a significant advance. Cost is another issue.
Why does Nissan (run by foreigner) sell its battery business vs. Toyota (run by Japanese) does internal research. Why do their strategies diverge? Who is smarter?
Battery research is a battle field. Any newcomer can disrupt this market.
So the question becomes: what role will Nippon Denko play in the battery market food chain in the future? Will it remain profitable? For how long? Read everything about batteries everyday-- news, reports. Will this company be worth more in next 5-10 years? Make an educated guess base on your growing body of knowledge. Evaluate the valuation vs. peers also.
I just keep reading and guessing/checking. -
