The company currently relies on overseas imports for all silicon carbide wafers used in the manufacture of power devices. With the subsidy, the company will set up facilities to produce gallium oxide wafers. The facility will enable NCT to supply alternative gallium oxide wafers in the event of a problem in the silicon carbide supply chain.

Currently, wafer production is being carried out at a factory on the Tamura Corporation site. The company is also looking at mass production in cooperation with AGC, an investor. As for gallium oxide diodes and transistors, the company hopes to develop a fabless operation, asking foundries to handle mass production. China and Taiwan are famous for their semiconductor foundries, but there are also companies in Japan that have their own strengths. NCT will choose the foundry that best suits its situation, such as ease of development and production volume.
